Welcome! Whether you landed on this page after listening to our episode on ChooseFI or are curious about what we had to say, you are in the right place.

Our episode

If you want to (re)listen to our episode on ChooseFI, listen to it below, or access it from the ChooseFI episode page (Ep. 223).

In this episode we discussed:

  • how Financial Independence (FI) helped us design our full time nomadic/slow travel life in our 30s
  • how we significantly de-risked our investments using a set it and (almost) forget it approaches.
  • why $40,000 per year is more than enough to live a comfortable nomadic life as a couple.
  • what is the practicality of traveling the world full-time including how we get significant deals on accommodation and international travels
  • how we’ve optimized what we travel with since we are carryon only travelers.
  • what are the challenges that come along the way and how we have been addressing them
  • the free travel app we’ve been building to help everyone track their expenses and help determine the true cost of living around the world for like-minded nomads/travelers.
  • and more…

Recommended resources

Since we cover a lot in this hour-long episode, we have a curated list of essential resources from our blog that go into greater depth on these topics. But first and foremost, if you haven’t done so yet, make sure to sign-up to our newsletter where we will be sharing exclusive content with you and send you our latest article.

Coronavirus

When we recorded our episode with the ChooseFI team (back in January 2020) COVID was just a flu mostly affecting China. Since then it has become the pandemic we all know about and has obviously affected our plans for the rest of the year. We have been sharing our update as well as the one from many like-minded nomads in a series of COVID-19 related posts.

Origin story

We briefly explain our background story at the beginning of the episode along with some key resources that we used to get ourselves started on our journey. If you want more details about our origin story, then this post is for you!

Spending strategies

Can you believe we spend less than $1,500/year in international flights for 2 people? This is all thanks to travel rewards. Check out this post to know more about how we pull this off and how you can do it too!

Our biggest expense is accommodation. We mostly use AirBnB to stay in comfortable apartments around the world for a month at a time. AirBnBs are usually not cheap, but we have some tips and tricks that have helped us get great discounts. We share our best techniques in this post.

Packing lists

Since we value minimalism, it was quite easy for us to follow The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing (by Marie Kondō) and start downsizing all of our belongings to only the essentials.

The two posts below provide you with a closer look at every single item we are currently carrying with us in our backpacks.

What does Mrs. NN currently travel with? This post exposes everything she has inside her carry on bags!

What does Mr. NN currently travel with? This post exposes everything he has inside her carry on bags!

Challenges

We touch on the challenges related to community and health on the podcast. If you want to know the other challenges (as well as the advantages) of a nomadic lifestyle, then this post is for you.

Travel Tool

Jonathan gave us a plug to talk about our travel tool that we initially created so we could free ourselves from the complex spreadsheets. Check out this post to learn more about our tool and sign-up if you want to use it!
