If you understand money, life is incredibly easy. If you don’t understand money, like the vast majority of people, life is incredibly hard.

This week I wanted to share with you a book I’ve been waiting for awhile and had the privilege to get an early copy of last month: “Quit Like a Millionaire: No Gimmicks, Luck, or Trust Fund Required”. Behind this “catchy title” you will find the work of personal finance bloggers & world travelers: Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung who also blog at www.millennial-revolution.com.
If you aren’t familiar with Kristy and Bryce’s story, you’re in for an entertaining, inspiring and actionable read. If you are familiar with this Canadian couple’s story, you’re still in for an entertaining, inspiring and actionable read because there was so much of their incredible story that I hadn’t heard previously through their blog or various podcast interviews.
“No gimmicks” (or bullsh*t either)
As you may know from their blog, Kristy and Bryce have a really fun sense of humor! They are strongly opinionated and “math sh*t up” (a term they coined on their blog) so that nobody can argue with the numbers (except the haters of course!). In that same fun but educational approach, they make compelling arguments on what is the shortest path to reach financial independence.
The tools are so practical and well put together that I wish I had this material in my hands when I started on my career and later embarked on our financial journey. In the book, they explain how to maximize the ROI on your education using the POT score, what CRAP really means, provide tools like the rule of 72, the 4% rule or the rule of 150% and much much more. You can take action on these tools to help make some of the biggest financial decisions in life driven by numbers rather than emotions.
“No luck.”
Think you are starting from a disadvantage and retiring early seems impossible? Well, wait until you read Kristy’s life story. The book starts on a very vulnerable tone as she opens up on her childhood growing up in China. She lived in poverty for many years where every resource had to be meticulously cherished for survival. Two decades later, she reached a net worth of a million dollars. Kristy’s atypical story is here to show that becoming a millionaire has nothing to do with luck or social status but rather on the decisions that someone makes through their lives. She takes us from a scarcity mindset to an abundant one and show the traps she faced along the way and how she overcame them so you might get there even faster!
“No trust fund required.”
Another great thing about the book is that you can start applying its principles no matter where you are in your life. Their story proves that millionaires do not have to start with a large sum and help from mom and dad. Even if you start with no money in the bank, if you follow the advice in this book, you can reach freedom before your neighbor who probably has a lot of stuff but not not that many investment assets.
“All I did was work hard and never take a dollar for granted, and I turned our above-average-but-not-unreasonably-so salary into a million dollars and retired at thirty-one.“
Kristy Shen, Quit Like a Millionaire
Our journey of quitting our jobs, selling all of our stuff and traveling the world was highly inspired by Kristy and Bryce. There are a number of FI trailblazers but very few that travel full-time to model after. They inspired us by showing that it is possible to live a fulfilled life of perpetual travel through FI. After meeting them in 2017, their excitement and confidence was infectious and they convinced us that we were ready to make this big life decision. They are our role models and encouraged us to start a blog to show that traveling the world is actually cheaper (& more fun) than staying at home. Whether you want to become a nomadic traveler or simply want to live your passion without having to worry about the financial aspect of life, “Quit Like a Millionaire: No Gimmicks, Luck, or Trust Fund Required” is a solid book to add at the top of your list. It will be life changing!
